Highlight
The highlight of my day was snagging a free leftover carrot cupcake. Delicious.

On another note, today I was wondering when are we going to have a president that speaks another language? Heck, why doesn't the Secretary of State speak another language? And I quote: "The Secretary of State, appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, is the President's chief foreign affairs adviser."
Foreign affairs. Doesn't speak another language. What does that say about how political figures are chosen - merit or connection?

A day in the life
Things are so good right now, I feel a little freakish walking around smiling all the time. Good freakish. Happy freakish. Here's what things look like...
Monday.
5 a.m. Wake up and run 10 miles. Fresh legs. Listen to NPR and catch up on the news. See hardly anyone. Get home before the sun rises.
7 a.m. Stop off for coffee and happen to know the barista, who is incredibly kind and gives me his discount.
7:30 a.m. - 10 a.m. Prep for being "on call" in Evidence. Surprise Hypo and my argument as defense counsel for an evidentiary issue up on appeal. Right. What does that even mean? Don't these people know I'm totally out of my element and unqualified for these sorts of shenanigans?
10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Evidence Class. I realize my understanding of "informal" is a tad on the casual side, but smile and keep it together. Attempt to make eye contact with my "jury of peers" (Hm. Literally and figuratively.), but realize no one is even paying attention to me and eyes are glued to computers. Feel relieved. Resolve to make eye contact with my professor all semester long, even if that's the most I get out of Evidence class, that I paid attention and made the professor feel as if one student was engaged. Raise typical, idealistic Carrie comments about how my hypothetical client didn't obstruct the Plaintiff's fundamental rights and access to justice.
12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Do my work developing a database of bilateral trade agreements. I'm a paid Research Assistant (and Project Manager (oooh, ahhh)) for a young, hot-shot Latin American professor at the grad school. After I make this database thing I'll start coding, testing hypotheses, and looking for things like clusters and patterns. Exciting! Joined by the lovely KS. Fine! Sheesh, people, I admit it - had another cup of coffee.
5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Book the squash court at the gym and practice my serve until my forearm hurts and my fingers are shaky. Approximately half an hour. Shower.
6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Scarf down dinner brought from home, attempting to save money. Ate delicious Trader Joe's indian fare an east coast friend shipped in a care package. (Hint Hint to all you loyal bloggie readers!)
7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. Int'l Business Transactions class. Figure out how I can multi-task and use my time wisely while listening in class.
9 - 11:30 p.m. Meet les amies GC and KS for a drinkie-drink at a dive bar. What are the chances -- it's karaoke night! Some people just have all the luck. Eat delicious nachos and sweet potato fries. Talk about boys (naturally) and school. Make plans to go dancing.
11:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. Walk home feeling ridiculously happy with my life right now.
12:00 - 12:30 a.m. Characteristic dicking around because I can never go straight to sleep when I get home.
12:30 a.m. The moment I've been waiting for, glorious sleep.

Snowy Monday
This weekend was great - had dinner at a professor's house on Friday night. Saturday I worked on my book review all day until I went to the Tiesto concert at night. So fun! I love love love Tiesto. The concert wasn't sold out or anything, but there were a ton of people there. For some reason, a bunch of girls befriended me (a girl, alone at a concert). Nice people, I felt like I had to have my guard up a little, though, what with the dark/crowded/drugs. But generally, I felt really relaxed and "ser" happy during the concert. That music really puts me in a weird trance (I swear, no drugs!). I can only compare it to cruising in "the zone" I get somewhere around mile 24 in the marathon. Pretty great concert!
Sunday I got up early, finished my book review, worked out, and then spent the rest of the afternoon working on a project for mining. I'm going to present tomorrow on Foreign Investment Climate/Risks in Colombia. It's super interesting, but I have much to do! I also have another presentation on CAFTA and the current trade dispute between Central American countries and the Dominican Republic. They're fighting over these nylon bags and plastic cord of string -- I'm going to argue there are deeper non-trade political reasons behind the dispute.
OH! And, Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest. A good day for Burma!
It's snowing this morning - I love it!

Made it through
Monday.
What a doozy.
My brain is pretty mushy right now, but I wanted to reflect on something (anything). Stagnant blogs are boring.
I went to a cool cafe here in Denver last weekend. Illegal Grounds. They had H&H bagels (!), good egg and cheese, Italian Illy coffee, empanadas and quiches. De-licious. Good atmosphere with open space, comfy chairs and couches. Free wireless. A friend and I sat, shared food, chatted and watched the snow fall before getting some homework done. The owner is a Peruvian-Jew! How crazy is that? It made me so happy that - for once - he didn't think my Spanish accent was from Spain. He knew exactly where I learned Spanish, "Ah! Tu hablas como los serranos!" You speak like the mountain people! My friend and I are going back sometime for some homemade ceviche. Mmmm! Buena onda...
Anyway, a quick update, but better than nothing. Off to bed for me, snow falling softly through the street lights.

No soy yo
Thus far exams have been (characteristically) beyond miserable. Just, wow. The general feeling I have these days is the exact reason why people decide NOT to go to law school. Anxiety. Dread. Stress. Pressure. I want to go to sleep to avoid it all, but I can't fall asleep when I finally let myself crawl into bed. My mind is racing. I have nightmares where I take exams and re-live my misery. I want to sleep late, but morning is my precious time to be alert and focused.
It doesn't help that the past few days have been full of snow and highs of about 10 degrees. Supposedly, we're getting 8 more inches tonight and lows of -4. That's crazy. That's 2 pairs of pants, 3 shirts and 2 jackets cold.
Nothing about school makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing by being here. Denver doesn't feel right. Hard to exercise outside (First snow was the first week of October. And, as you know, I hate the treadmill). Hard to meet people. Hard to use public transit/bike/walk. Hard to find diversity. Hard to meet friends who don't have husband-boyfriend-fiance obligations.
Hard to see myself here beyond the next year and a half.
Hard to see myself here for the next year and a half.
Hard to see myself.
No soy yo.

Case of the Mondays
It's 14 degrees outside. The roads are a thick sheet of ice. My car won't start. The bus comes twice an hour, and involves a mile+ walk, anyway. Sigh. Welcome to my Monday.
Things got better, and I trust the car will start when it gets warmer out. But, REALLY!? It just makes me look forward to leaving on Friday, a mere 3 days away! And, I get to spend a whole evening with Gracie-poo! She, kindly, is driving me to the airport Friday morning at 5 a.m.-ish. Goodness, when was the last time I was invited to a sleepover?? :)
Lots of work to get done before Friday, though. 1 down, 3 to go.
On another note, I heard this cool story on the radio today about a kid in Malawi who just decided to make a windmill. He read about it in 2 books at the public library, after he couldn't afford to pay the US $80 to go to public school. Except, really, he didn't even read it because it was in English and he didn't know English. So, he learned about how to make a windmill from looking at pictures in 2 books at the public library after dropping out of school. And DID he make a windmill! From gum trees, old bicycle parts and trash around the town, he made a 39 foot windmill that converts wind into energy. It provides electricity for radios, cell phone charges, and 2 light-bulbs. He's since built 2 other windmills that work even when it's not windy. He's now 22 years old. Amazing. This story makes me feel pretty much the same as when I see 14 year old Olympic medalist figure skaters on T.V. -- I'm already too old for genius, raw talent and wonder!

Trying not to Globalize
This epitomizes my day: I was out for a walk this evening and stopped to smell the roses. They didn't smell. Even worse, my gut reaction was to be embarrassed (what!?) that I had done something so naive as to stop and smell the roses, actually expecting them to smell good.
Sigh. Is the week really just beginning?

Monday Musings
So, had a surprisingly somewhat-relaxing day working on my paper (though it's still not done and due in 11 hours), hanging out with Melanie and then taking a break to get a 4:00 p.m. mojito at the place that play really good salsa music. I also decided that I needed more than just the 2 pairs of running shorts I've been wearing for the past 2 years. And, I committed to the idea that I think it's okay to run in a skirt by buying my first official running skirt. I had reservations and it's way shorter than my running shorts (grr) but I ran in it tonight and love it!
I took Melanie to the airport, always sad, and now am having alone-time for the first time in awhile. Went for a run when I got back and it was good tonight. Felt quick and pretty light. I had a good mix on my iShuffle and it felt nice to run in the evening for once. I've been running morning (eeaaaarly) before the heat and before the craziness of the day. Tuesdays and Thursday I've been getting home at 10 p.m., so I obviously can't really run then. Anyway, time to finish writing my paper. Here's a parting picture I took in San Francisco and a poem I love.

Case of the Moondays
I had an eventful day today. I woke up late (5:35!) because I forgot to set an alarm. Argh. I straggled to get myself out for as long a run as I could. There I was, listening to NPR and bopping along York Street. Seeing the usual sights: the sun rising, friendly construction workers, an empty Cherry Creek, a blue iPhone lying on the sidewalk - wait, what? An iPhone? Yes! I found an iPhone. I almost just left it because I didn't want to be involved or spend the time, but then I decided I should pick it up in case a less-honest person were to find it and simply keep it. I kept running and tripped big time on Washington Street. That stupid sidewalk is the worst. That's the 3rd time I've flat-out fallen here in Denver while running on the sidewalk. Scrapped both knees, blood streaming down, etc. I admit, I pitied myself and was saying things like "I hate Denver" the whole way home. Made it home, took a quick shower and biked down to yoga class at 7:00 a.m. While trying to get in contact with the iPhone owner, I didn't get a chance to eat breakfast or put anything in my bag for later. I realized I forgot my wallet! Gah! No food from 5:35 - 1:15 p.m., after run-bike-yoga-class-bike? I would never make it! Fortunately, a friend lent me $3.00 and I made it through with coffee and a day-old scone. Phew.
The day got better from there. Class was fascinating, bike home was good, got the iPhone back to the grateful owner (who made me accept a $10 gift card to Starbucks), and had a nice afternoon at work. Then, hit up The Spot with some neighbor/friends for happy hour beer and apps. I'm wiped, ready for bed at 8:40 p.m.
So far in Denver I've fallen while running 3 times, been hit by a car while riding my bike 1 time, and fallen/slid on ice while riding my bike 3 times. Yeesh!
