Just the gym, please

I think one reason I don't like the gym is because people are always watching you and they judge you. It's true. I'm just doing my thing, trying to do my best to get back in shape. I don't need you checking out what resistance or what incline I'm at. The comments I hate the most are about sweating. Like today, I'm leaving the gym and the woman at the desk says, "Woa, woo-wee, good workout huh?" What's that supposed to mean!? Yes. I sweat. I probably smell, too. It's like 80 degrees outside and then I go inside, with no fans, lots of other people working out in a small, windowless place and- gosh darn it - I worked out hard. So, yes, it was a good workout. And I was all sweaty. And smelly. Sheesh. I'll just take the gym, hold the judgment on the side, please.

  1. First of all, not all gyms are like that with people always watching and judging you. It doesn't sound like the woman at the desk was judging you. It sounds like she just wanted to make conversation.

Second, there may occasionally be bored gym employees, careful trainers who don't want you to drop 100 pounds on your head or who know better exercises to get you in shape than running hundreds of miles, romantic or envious admirer or small town gossip.... But why bother fretting? You don't need to negatively internalize things. Even if she was like, "damn girl, you stink! keep moving before I barf", you don't have to feel bad. You could have a) told her to mind her own business, b) told her she looks like she needs to hit the gym more often, or c) just ignore her. Don't linger on what other people think and don't let people walk all over you. Most people don't really care that much, so if something bothers you, just address it and get over it. There's no reason why you shouldn't love yourself.

  2. Oops! I didn't mean to give the impression that I don't love myself or that I am angry at my gym. Quite the contrary, I love my new gym and the people there are incredibly nice! I was just trying to be funny. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for sharing your comment!
